Wellsville Bank
Wellsville, KS (2018, 2021)
418 Main St
This is a historic rehabilitation of the Wellsville Bank in Kansas. The two-story brick masonry building was constructed in 1884. It was previously used as a bank and feed store and has recently become a museum owned by the Wellsville Historical Society.
The project was completed in two phases with the goal of rehabilitating the building using as much existing material as possible to not take away from its historical significance. Exterior mortar joints were repointed, and original cast iron elements were restored. Fractured bricks, deteriorating windows, and non-original wood doors were replaced to match the original design. Inside, plaster walls were refurbished, spalled bricks were replaced, and the sheet rock ceiling was upgraded with new acoustic tiles. A restroom, office, kitchenette and storage area were added for the museum. Storm windows were added, and electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems were updated. A new metal exit door was installed, the sidewalk outside was repaired, and the building was made fully accessible.
The Wellsville Historical Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the stories of the people of Wellsville. Operated by volunteers, the Society opens its doors to visitors on Saturdays, offering guided tours and insights into the town’s rich history.
