Granada
Lawrence, KS (2021)
1020 Massachusetts Street
The Granada is a music venue located in downtown Lawrence. The historic building was built in 1928 as a silent movie theater, and transitioned to a live music host in 1993.
Hernly’s primary focus was rehabilitating the building to enhance functionality and make it handicap accessible. Key updates included extending the balcony to increase upstairs space and adding new bleacher seating to the mezzanine’s first level. Offices were added on the second and third mezzanine levels, and the third level received a new upper bar and unisex bathroom. Ramps were installed to connect the mezzanine levels, and new rails, as well as full- and half-height walls, were incorporated throughout the structure. Additionally, bathrooms and dressing rooms were reconfigured for accessibility, and the flooring and walls were refurbished.
The Granada currently has a capacity of 900, reduced from its original 2,300 to create a more intimate concert experience. Over the years, it has hosted several renowned national and international artists, including Weezer, The Smashing Pumpkins, John Mayer, and more.
